Monday Messages-Stop waiting

This reminds me that I need to find happiness now instead of at some future date when I think things will be better.  There is always something that may be better at a future day, but then there is always something that I will miss about my life now.  And only by treasuring what is NOW can we live our lives to the fullest.

Sunday Blessings-the Word of God

Some people may not appreciate that the words found in scripture are really, truly the words of God.  Some scriptures tell a story or the geneology of people or are the words of men.  But many scriptures lead us to God, are about God or (most importantly) His very words.  Sometimes when I need to hear God talking to me, I read until I can hear His voice.  Then I can hear Him speaking to me.  Not in words so much, but in feelings and thoughts that come into my mind.  The older I get, the easier it is to distinguish between my own thoughts and His.  I am so grateful for His love for me and to be able to feel it and hear it in my mind.  And no matter how many times I have read certain verses, they speak to me in different ways.  Feeling His love for me is the greatest feeling I have ever felt.  I love His words.

Friday Favorites-my favorite lotion

Skinnami is an organic lotion made by Suzie Mc Queen.  She grows the herbs and plants and mixes everything herself.  The Minty Fresh is my favorite, but all her products are great for dry skin and even eczema.  Check out her website for the full line at Skinnami.com.

Thursday Tips & Tricks-Smoreos

Hello my friend! Where have you been all of my life?!? Hideously Delicious S’MOreos

Take your toasted marshmallow and put on twisted open Oreo cookie.  Last week I bought Reese's Oreos and we tried it.  It was so so good.  I've also had them with Nutter Butters which is also very good.

Tuesday miTunes-Best Day of my Life by American Authors

Such a catchy, fun tune.  Makes me want to dance.  Seems like a great song for a wedding reception...

Monday Messages-Inner struggle between good and evil

A perfect representation of the struggle within. I find this sentiment so very beautiful.
There is an excellent talk called The Struggle for the Soul by Melvin J. Ballard that talks about a similar idea.  The adversary desires to have our soul be miserable like himself and will use many tactics pertaining to the one thing he will never have-a body.  But I like the simple idea of this story that tells us to feed the good and good win win inside ourselves.

Sunday Blessings-Air Conditioning

I know it's not a typical thing to be grateful for.  Most of the things I'm grateful for I have already mentioned in previous posts.  But when it is so hot outside and I feel the cool air, it makes me think of times when we didn't have air conditioning.  I guess sometimes we are more appreciative when we have to do without something.  After camping, I am most grateful for a shower and a comfy bed.  I am amazed at how comfortable our lives are with so many modern conveniences.  The things that save us time (like dishwashers, washing machines, and cars) or make us more comfortable (like air-conditioning, heaters and cars) provide us with extra time and energy to do other things.  But how do we use all the time we save?  These are also things we should not take for granted, because they can all be gone in a split second.  Every corner of our earth has natural disasters that could strike at any given moment.  Besides that, one could lose a job and not be able to afford a place to live or suddenly be faced with some terrible illness.  So it's good to be grateful for the small things we might take for granted-like air conditioning.

Friday Favorites-The Giver

The Giver by Lois Lowry 1999, Bantam Books

One of my favorite books is this dystopia book by Lois Lowry.  In fact there are 4 books in this series and I love all of them.  I would add this to my list of books to read and then watch the movie.  It's a great discussion book for kids 6-8th grade.  The movie comes out mid-August, but read the book first.  They can never do justice in a movie to the images created by your imagination.  I especially like the idea of seeing what other people don't see, or hearing what others can't hear.  There are several parts that bring a new perspective to things we take for granted.

Thursday Tips & Tricks-Shower scrubbing wand

tub and shower cleaner

This idea was found on Joyful Homemaking.  Fill the dishwashing wand with half Dawn liquid and half vinegar.  Then hang in shower and scrub while showering.  Can't wait to do this!

Tuesday miTunes-Soak up the Sun

This is an older song that I don't hear much any more but I still remember one part of the lyrics that rings truer and truer as the years go on.  It says, "it's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got."  Such a profound line of an otherwise so-so song.

Sunday Blessings-Happy Father's Day

It takes more than just fertilization to have the honor of being a father.  That's why if I speak of my father, I am referring to the man who raised me from the time he met my mother.  I was 7 years old and wanted a father in my life.  Along came a man who was young, energetic, funny and head over heels in love with my mom.  He'll never be rich, because he'd just give it all away.  But he's rich in other ways.  He's not a scholar, but he's smart enough to know what's important in life.  And he can remember the name of my best friend from 3rd grade and the family from church that had twins back in the mid 80's.  He doesn't know his way around on the internet, but he's got more friends than anyone I know, even though he's not even on facebook.   He's a great listener and will cry right along with even a stranger with a sad story.  Basically, he's one of a kind and I think he's the best dad ever.  I am so grateful he found us.

Saturday Quotes-Today is the greatest

"Today is the greatest" is a quote by those seeking to find the good in each day.  Some days are easy to like and others take effort, but hopefully we can treasure the great days to help us when the days are dreadful or agonizing or depressing.  On those hard days, I think it helps to remember a day that we thought was the greatest.

Tuesday miTunes-So Easy by Phillip Phillips

So I know it's funny that I chose this particular Youtube, but several people didn't get the words right, so I couldn't post them.  It's really the song I like not the video, but I still haven't figured out how to put a song on my blog without doing it through Youtube.  Oh well.

Monday Messages-A bell is no bell 'til you ring it

One of the first poems I memorized is:
A bell is no bell 'til you ring it. A song is no song 'til you sing it. And love in your heart wasn't put there to stay - Love isn't love 'til you give it away. ~Oscar Hammerstein, The Sound of Music
We will never regret giving too many hugs or being too nice.  Love is more than just something we feel, it is something to give.

Sunday Blessings-An Amazing Race

This past week I was able to go on an "Amazing Race" with the youth for their Youth Conference.  We traveled by bus and light rail to downtown Denver and they had to follow clues around the city.  It was a ton of walking and I was impressed at how well I was able to keep up with them.  They were such a nice group of kids-especially MY group.  But some of the most memorable things were people we met or saw downtown, especially homeless people and street performers and some just hanging around.  One challenge was to play chess with a stranger and teach a gospel principle.  You had to find the public chess boards and talk someone into playing with you.  The guy we found was really nice and was trying not to win too fast, but really our team would have liked him to just do it quick so we could move on.  Another time, we saw a guy playing a banjo who was very talented and I wondered if he made a living just playing his banjo.  People in general are very nice and helpful.  I've always preferred to believe that people are basically good, some are just lost or have had a hard life.  I know there are some downright evil people in the world, but I didn't come across any in the past few days.  Of course, I also know that the Lord was blessing and protecting this great group of kids and I'm grateful for that.  I'm also grateful to have been able to participate and to be with my daughter.

Friday Favorites-relaxing summer days

Green pool chair in front of a swimming pool

In order for me to enjoy summer and have had my fill of it, so I'm ready for Fall, I need to be outside.  But I burn easily, so one of my favorite things to do is lounge by the pool in the shade and read.  For some reason, the sound of the water is soothing, even if there are lots of kids around.  (Teenagers and rowdy adults are a different story).   But I enjoy just being outside with an occasional dip to cool off and sometimes I don't even get in at all or put on my swimsuit.  My favorite book to read by the water is Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach, which I'll talk more about next Friday.

Thursday Tips & Tricks-snacks for the day trip

Trail Mix

Whether you're going hiking, to the pool, beach, baseball game or theme park, you'll want to pack some snacks.  You want something you'll actually eat, nothing that will melt or get smashed, doesn't need to be refrigerated, lightweight, and disposable.  Here are some ideas:

1.  Buy some Snacks you don't normally have in the house-those are boring and you (especially the kids) will probably opt for the great-smelling popcorn or $12 candy.  It's okay to splurge on a treat, but if you have snacked well, you won't need to spend as much because you're hungry.  Maybe the pouch applesauce (it's fun to suck from the pouch) or character snacks (Angry Bird shaped crackers or Mickey Mouse fruit snacks)
2. Make your own trail mix.  Use Reece's Pieces instead of plain M&M's or almonds instead of peanuts.  Try adding dried coconut or your favorite cereal.  Use dried cranberries instead of raisins.  Letting the kids mix their own will help them be more inclined to eat it.
3.  Be sure to hydrate.  The powder add-ins will be a lot cheaper than buying soda or juices.  I love the Vitamin C packets.  They actually taste pretty good too.
4.  Energy Bars or cereal bars.  Cliff bars and Lara bars are my personal favorite.  Also, the Golden Graham cereal bars are pretty good.
5. I heard this tip about Disneyland, but it could be adapted for other places-at the Main Street Ice Cream Parlor, you can get the biggest Waffle Cone and ice creamless cones and scoop from the giant waffle cone for the kids.  Sharing a treat is a fun way to enjoy and try things.  At a baseball game, it's easy to share peanuts and popcorn.  Pack some baggies so everyone gets their own.

Wacky Wednesday-Poor grammar

There are so many things wrong with this that it is hilariously excrutiating. If you can't spot every single one of them - right down to the misplaced punctuation - you need to get off your dead ass and study the dictionary and rules of speech until you can.
There are so many things wrong with this.  It's painful, but hilarious.  I am one of those people that cannot repin something on Pinterest if it's grammatically incorrect.  I don't judge people (especially if it's accidental), but it's like nails on a chalkboard.

Tuesday miTunes-Shine Your Way

My new favorite song.  This is from the movie "The Croods" and my son sang it with the choir at his HS graduation.  It was awesome.  The words are what I really love.  It reminds me to shine (think positive, do good, have faith) even if it's dark and soon you will find your way.

Monday Messages-Truth, Lies and Your Self Worth

Lie: Your worth is determined by looking and acting in the world’s way.
Truth: Following the Lord’s way builds a sense of eternal worth.
Lie: Your worth comes from how you compare to others.
Truth: Everyone has different gifts. You can feel good about yourself and be grateful no matter what your talents are.
Lie: Self-esteem comes from worldly success.
Truth: God’s view and expectations are what matter.
Lie: Good self-esteem is all about building me.
Truth: You’ll find joy in serving God and others.
President Thomas S. Monson has taught: “Your Heavenly Father loves you—each of you. That love never changes. It is not influenced by your appearance, by your possessions, or by the amount of money you have in your bank account. It is not changed by your talents and abilities. … God’s love is there for you whether or not you feel you deserve love. It is simply always there”

Sunday Blessings-Blessings for others

I am grateful today for the blessings granted to my family members.  My son got his first job after many hours of online and in person applications.  He had a tough time even with fast food places because he has no experience and said he was not available on Sundays.  I was praying that someone would be willing to hire him despite those 2 things.  I pray for family members and their specific needs every day, some of which have not happened yet, but I know that if we are patient and if it is a good thing for us, it will happen.  I guess agency has a part in it too.  I can pray for my children, but if they makes a poor choice, my prayers cannot override the consequences of their actions.  Luckily, my children are currently making wise choices, so that is a blessing to me as well.  But I do believe that prayers on behalf of others have power, so I will continue to pray for them.
