Thursday Tips & Tricks-Keep lettuce crisp

How to keep lettuce fresh and crisp - just put a paper towel with the lettuce in a gallon size zip lock bag. It absorbs the moisture that causes you lettuce to wilt. Try it!

I have been doing this as long as I can remember.  Maybe I got it from my mom, but I'm not sure.  And it really does help keep the lettuce crisp longer.  It may seem counter-intuitive but when you've dried of the lettuce with a paper towel, put a new, dry one inside a ziploc baggie and it keeps it crisp.  You might think a paper towel that gets damp would wilt it faster, but as long as it's not really wet, I don't even have to change the paper towel to keep the lettuce good for several days.

Wacky Wednesday-Grammar Humor and cats

What's the difference between a CAT and a COMMA?

One has claws at the end of it's paws.

The other is a pause at the end of a clause.

Isn't our kitty Piper so cute???

Tuesday miTunes-Flashback-Pat Benatar singing "We Belong"

So I decided to just listen to the radio and stopped at 101.1 KOZI, which is some oldies mixed with new stuff and after the commercial, this song started playing.  Immediately, I knew it was one of my 80's favorites, and I started singing along and I remembered every word.  It's funny how it just took me back and made me smile.  And it's kind of surprise treat when a song you like comes on the radio.  I think in our digital, on-demand age, we have lost something of that fun, surprised energy that comes from a certain song you like just playing in the universe by chance.  I'm not sure if that makes any sense, but there it is.

Monday Messages-How to be alone

This is a fascinating video about how to be happy when you are alone.  I find this so interesting and hope that some of my single friends will gain something from it like go to the movies or go out to eat instead of always getting takeout and a Redbox  Even those who are not single but have difficulty being alone may be encouraged to do things alone instead of hibernating or waiting for their spouse or kids to get back home.
I remember a time when I felt really lonely right before my second year of college, before any of my friends or roommates had arrived.  No TV, before the days of cell phones, and no car.  I was lonelier than I had ever been in my life and one thing that made a huge difference was taking myself to a movie.  I'll never forget it.  The movie was "The Trip to Bountiful."  It was a strange movie and I barely remember it, but something happened to me as I treated myself to popcorn and watched it among other people, but by myself.  I think it made me realize that I can be good company for myself and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.  I learned that I like myself and it's okay to do things with just me.

Sunday Blessings-blue skies and sunshine

Blue skies and sunshine #KHTogetherWe are getting some pretty warm days lately and it kind of makes me look forward to cooler days.  But no matter what time of the year it is, I love blue skies and sunshine the most.  I love that where I live, there are over 300 days of sunshine.  Something about the sun shining brightens my spirits.  In a favorite book of mine called "City of Ember," they live underground and I know that not seeing the sunshine and blue skies would be the hardest thing for me.  Even living in Alaska would be tough.  I wouldn't mind the long days, but it wouldn't be worth it to also have the days when you hardly see the sun.  The sun also represents the love of God giving us His perfect Son.  So on this Sunday, I am also reminded that the Son brings us light and truth, life and happiness.

Friday Favorites-my favorite gum

I always wanted the gum in Willy Wonka that tastes like real food, specifically dessert.   Extra has several great flavors that are amazingly almost like the real thing:
My 2 favorites are Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
and Lemon Squares.  Raspberry Vanilla Cupcake is the newest one.

Monday Messages-One armed Judo champion

Sometimes your greatest weakness can become your greatest strength. Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.
The boy began lessons with an old Japanese judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn't understand why, after three months of training the master had taught him only one move.
"Sensei," the boy finally said, "Shouldn't I be learning more moves?"
"This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know," the sensei replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.
Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.
This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened.
"No," the sensei insisted, "Let him continue."
Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.
On the way home, the boy and sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.
"Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?"
"You won for two reasons," the sensei answered. "First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm."
The boy's greatest weakness had become his greatest strength.

Sunday Blessings-marriage

Being married and having someone to share all life's ups and downs with has been a huge blessing to me.  After spending 26 years with him, I must say that I feel like we've been together forever and yet it seems like only yesterday.  I am so glad that I kept a journal right before, during and since we met because it reminds me of how strongly I felt back then about him and helps me realize that I promised to stick with him forever.  He's not perfect, but he's mine and I love him.  We've built a life together that is connected by children, religion, shared experiences, hardships and miracles.  We disagree sometimes, but we are willing to come together rather than be drawn apart.  I can't find who said it, but many marital counselors ask:  Would you rather be right or happy?
We all like to be right and think we are right.  I have learned through many experiences that I would much rather be happy.  I have on occasion felt the need to be understood so much that I would not give in, but agreed to disagree on the subject-usually these involve raising our children.
I am grateful to have a husband who loves me and who treats me well and appreciates what I do.  I am grateful to have such a good marriage.  I am grateful to have an eternal marriage, where we have been sealed together forever in a temple of God.

Friday Favorites-garage sale season

There's something exciting about finding a treasure for a great deal.  I love a great find and garage sales are the perfect way for me to do it.  I don't buy a lot of junk because my husband hates clutter, so I do a lot of looking and browsing and driving.  But it's thrilling to find some great picture-which I did last Friday for only $12 or cool toy for y granddaughter-who doesn't care that it's not new.  My very favorite kind are the community sales where there are tons up and down the streets of the neighborhood.

Tuesday miTunes-Wild Child by Enya

I really like this song.  I'm not sure this video really captures the lyrics for me, but they are nice pictures.  The lyrics remind me to "stop and listen" and "take the time, from the helter skelter" to enjoy the day. It says, "let the rain fall down, everywhere around you" and "let the day go on and on."  Also interesting is why the title of Wild Child.  Although, I guess when you have small children around, it's most important to sing out "What a day!" in a joyful voice and try to savor the short time when children are small.  Easier after those days are gone.  More difficult when you are knee-deep in the day to day.

Monday Messages-Time video

This is a great visual to follow up on the quote from last Saturday.  The only part I wish I could cut out is the part about time is money.  While I agree that money can be lost, if we are using time wisely, there are quite a few things that rank higher than money to me.  Time spent with my family is time well spent and I would tend to put money lower than anything involving helping other people.  I would put money lower than educational things and spending time in nature.  I know money is valuable and a commodity we need in this world, but I just don't rank it as high as this video does.

Saturday Quotes-Time is free

Time is priceless
A friend of my son wanted to come do a knife presentation and I thought it was interesting that I honestly don't have the money to buy them, but I do have the time to listen to him for an hour just so he can get paid for that.  Whereas, there are several people I know who have the money but not the time.  I am grateful that I at least have some extra time if not extra money.  There are still women in the world who do daily backbreaking work like washing clothes that have neither.

Sea of dandelions
Even weeds can be beautiful.  Plus, who made dandelions a weed anyway?  Probably the same one who said Pluto is no longer a planet.

Thursday Tips & Tricks-so you don't get blisters

friction-block-lg
I've never heard of this stuff, but I need to get some and try it.  I guess you just apply it to where your skin is rubbing (hot spots) or where you usually get blisters and it feels like you're wearing socks.

Tuesday miTunes-Finding Home by Mindy Gledhill

This song brings back a lot of memories for me of childhood.  I have an excellent memory of my childhood and it's fun to remember such a simple time of life.  Especially when she sings of pocket change and the candy bins.  We traveled and moved a lot when I was growing up and I remember how excited I got to go into the Gift Shop or the Store.  When I was very young, I "helped" my mom at the Drive-in and distinctly remember whoppers as my favorite penny candy.  Another time, I remember staying at a campground and begging for change to spend at the camp store.
This song reminds me that those childhood days are fond memories because I worried less about complicated things and what I wished I had but instead focused on what was in front of me that I could afford.  I don't remember wishing I had more money, but just relishing that I had some and could decide for myself what it was worth spending it on.

Monday Messages-Pass it on...

This video is not only about paying it forward when someone does something nice for you, but about those watching a kind act and passing it on.  Often, when we witness the kindness of another, it inspires us just as much as a kind act done to ourselves.

Sunday Blessings-faith of our fathers

The Elders were over for our July 4th celebration and challenged us to ponder and study about faith to increase our faith.  My thoughts immediately went to the faith of our founding fathers and those who were good men and women seeking to find truth and looking to God for answers.  They prayed to God and asked for His help in their quest for independence.  I am humbled and grateful for their faith and diligence.  It's interesting that the Bible Dictionary says that "faith is a principle of action and power..."  and "true faith always moves its possessor to some kind of physical and mental action."  The founding fathers are truly a great example of this.  I hope to teach my grandchildren that the reasons we celebrate with all the fireworks, parades and fanfare is to honor the courage and faith of our nation's first leaders and to celebrate the victory that would not have been possible without divine help.

In a great talk called God's Hand in the Founding of America, given in 1976 by L. Tom Perry, he says,

The success of the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War came about through men who were raised up by God for this special purpose. You must read the Declaration of Independence to feel its inspiration. You merely need to study history to recognize that a group of fledgling colonies defeating the world’s most powerful nation stemmed from a force greater than man. Where else in the world do we find a group of men together in one place at one time who possessed greater capacity and wisdom than the founding fathers—Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and others? But it was not to their own abilities that they gave the credit. They acknowledged Almighty God and were certain of the impossibility of their success without his help. Benjamin Franklin made an appeal for daily prayers in the Constitutional Convention. In that appeal he said, “If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? I believe without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the building of Babel.” (Mark E. Petersen, The Great Prologue, Deseret Book Co., 1975, p. 88.)

Saturday Quotes- Being happy

Those who don't understand this quote will spend a lot of time and energy just reacting to things and people.  Those who get it, will spend more time and energy being proactive.

Happy Independence Day

I always look forward to the BBQ, the sides and the fireworks.  I also reflect on how blessed we are in this country and how much I appreciate the United States of America.

This is my one year anniversary writing this blog.  I'm not even sure if anyone reads it daily.  I know a few family members and close friends do occasionally.  I had a goal to do it for at least a year every single day.  Thank goodness there is a way to schedule postings ahead of time.  It has been a great creative outlet for me an I ended up just doing for myself.  But I see now why people stop doing blogs.  It is a lot of work.  A lot of my stuff comes from Pinterest.  But I'm glad to have another way to keep track of those things that inspire me and to be able to share them with you (whoever you are).  I think even my future self will appreciate the collection of "Sunshiney" things here.
So, I may keep going every day or I may decide to just post here and there.
It's been REAL...
And it's been FUN...
Okay, it's been REAL FUN...

Thursday Tips & Tricks-remembering names

In her blog article Vivian Giang tells about a Dale Carnegie course she took and shares a great association technique to remembering people's names.  The main point is to REALLY listen to what they are saying so you can associate things with them.  The crazier, the better.  I guess you could associate my name Lisa Phipps with a picture in your mind of me doing flips signing papers to lease an apartment.  But read the article for some other examples.

Tuesday miTunes-Story of My Life by One Direction

Not sure exactly what some of the words are, but I like this song.  It's in my current playlist.
